synopsis

As Christmas approaches, Karen decorates her tree in Argentina when an unexpected message arrives from a woman in Norway. The woman reveals a surprising connection: her grandmother was once romantically involved with Karen’s grandfather, nearly a century ago. Intrigued, Karen sifts through old family photographs, hoping to uncover traces of this long-lost relationship. But the deeper she delves, the more questions arise.

Determined to uncover the truth, Karen embarks on a journey to Norway to reunite with her family and trace her grandfather’s past. Her trip unfolds into a rich exploration of childhood memories, her “Bestefar’s” immigration story, lost love, and the scars of war—leading her closer to the answers she’s been searching for.

director's statement

In Bestefar, I aimed to capture a unique journey across generations, infused with history, identity, and a family’s quest for answers. What drew me to this documentary was the chance to uncover a story that is both deeply personal and universally relatable—a story of immigration, love, and the lasting scars of war. As a director, my passion lies in seeking out fresh perspectives, and each project is an opportunity to connect with incredible people and explore places I might never otherwise experience. My work is inspired by the idea that every day brings something new and meaningful. This film allowed me to dive into a narrative rich with emotion and discovery, inviting audiences to journey alongside Karen as she uncovers the pieces of her family’s past. With over 20 years in storytelling, I approached Bestefar with the same energy and passion I bring to all my projects, making each moment unique and unrepeatable, much like the singular histories we each carry.

about the writer

I was born in Buenos Aires in March 1971. I grew up amidst a combination of cultural influences, my family on my mother’s side being Spanish and Italian, on my father’s side being Norwegian and Finnish, and, of course, born and raised in Argentina. I love writing real stories about real people. I love listening to whoever wants to tell me a good story, specially those about immigration. The whole project around Bestefar was particularly moving for me, because it’s about my roots, the family secrets that I needed to find out and the warmth of home that you can feel inside, even if you are miles away from the place where you live. Music was the driving force throughout this project, I believe it’s the perfect accent for every feeling.
